Jose Mourinho has outlined his plans for the next two years by targeting his sights on all the silverware on offer for Manchester United.

The Portuguese manager signed a contract extension with the club until at least 2020 on Thursday - increasing his old £13.8million-per-year deal to about £15m a year.

And speaking exclusively to BT Sport about what he hopes to achieve at Old Trafford, the 55-year-old was very forthright with his ambitions.

'[To be] better than now,' he said. 'Fighting for what we are fighting now but with different ammunition. Are we trying to win every competition? Yes. But probably, we won't.

'I see us being real contenders for everything. That is what I want to achieve.'

Hopes of a Premier League title this campaign seem remote due to Manchester City's stellar form - as they sit 12 points above second-placed United with 14 games remaining.

In seasons gone-by United's current 53-point tally would see them challenging for the title and while Mourinho praised their 'noisy neighbours' he believes his ever-improving side deserve credit too.

'City deserves more credit,' he conceded.

'With the number of points we have, we would be normally with a distance of four or five and really, really in the fight for the title.

'We are doing good things. We also deserve a little bit of credit which sometimes we get, sometimes we don't.'

United, who remain in the hunt for FA Cup and Champions League glory this season, pulled off a coup this January transfer window with the signing of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal.

The Chilean looked set to join City before United swooped in with a swap deal involving Henrikh Mkhitaryan joining Arsenal.

And reflecting on that transfer, Mourinho was delighted with the actions of the Red Devils' hierarchy.

'The club did amazingly well. I repeat, the owners with the green light to go with everything, Ed Woodward and his people the way they worked around the deal, they did it very, very well.'
