Description

Introduced into the region, originally from China. It has been cultivated for centuries for its fruit.

Flowers

The tiny flowers are yellowish in small lateral clusters, the petals are smaller than the sepals.

Leaves

Pinnate row of leaflets on either side of the stem. Row of alternate, smooth leaflets on either side of the branch, margins finely toothed; spines in pairs.

Fruits Seeds

Drupe: egg-shaped, the size of a large olive with a large pip, 1.5-3 cm long.

Edible

Fruit, eaten when wrinkled and spongy, fresh or cooked. Very nutritious.

Medical
