Goniothalamus megalocalyx is a small tree that can grow up to 8 m tall. The name megalocalyx is derived from the Greek words “megalo” which means large and “calyx” which is also an English word. As the name implies, it describes the large calyx or sepal of the flower that these species possess. The sepals are around 5 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. The outer bark is aromatic with a spongy and slightly soft texture.  The young twigs have brown or black colour with a bumpy surface that is occasionally covered with sparse and stiff dark brown hair. The dried twigs are grey-brown, with cracking and ridges along their length. The chartaceous leaves have an oblong-obovate shape and measure about 29–61 cm long and 8–15 cm wide. The leaves dry to a grey-green or brown on both sides. The midrib on the upper surface is slightly immersed, but the lower surface is prominent and smooth edge. The outer petals are pink or pale purple with large linear-lanceolate shapes, measuring up to 10 cm long and 1.5 cm wide. On the other hand, the inner petals are ovate, measuring approximately 30 mm long and 11 mm wide, coated with adpressed brown hair. This species produces many clavate monocarps that are 20–25 mm long and 7–10 mm wide. When it dried, it turns brown with unevenly wrinkled and coated with tiny adpressed reddish brown hairs. Each monocarp has one brown seed that is flattened and ovoid, measuring up to 18 mm long, 9 mm wide, and 5 mm thick, and coated with thick long pale hairs.  This species is only found in lowland and hill forests located in Kalimantan (Indonesia), Brunei, and a few locations in Sarawak such as Bintulu, Kapit, and Song (Turner et al., 2014).
