Photinia is an evergreen shrub that may make an attractive addition to your garden. The new growth of leaves is bright red; the flowers are clusters of small, white blossoms.
There are several species grown: Photinia x fraseri, Photinia glabra, Photinia serrulata and a deciduous species Photinia villosa.
It is often used as a hedge or screen in the landscape. Because of its fast growth and dense foliage, it makes an excellent screen. In my neighborhood, there is a hedge 8 feet tall and 40 feet long bordering a property. Professional maintenance keeps it in-bounds.
Photinia should be grown in full sun with regular water.
Photinia is in the rose family Rosaceae. Like other trees (pear, apple) in this family, Photinia is susceptible to fireblight.
