We've discussed a breadth of topics at this year's #STATBreakthrough Summit West. ➡ Overdose death rates remain near all-time highs. The Tenderloin, a historic downtown neighborhood in San Francisco, remains rife with open-air substance use and drug dealing. Amid backlash to harm reduction, addiction experts Braunz Courtney, Keith Humphreys and Ayesha Appa warned against reprising the ‘war on drugs’ to our audience and Lev Facher. ➡ The discovery of reused or altered images in scientific papers is shining a bright and uncomfortable spotlight on the research world. Jonathan Wosen, PhD spoke with science's new watchdogs Elisabeth Bik and Sholto David, PhD about their methods. “The thing I try and keep in my head when I’m reading a paper, if I find an error is, ‘Would this lose marks in an undergraduate project?’ And if that’s true, then I don’t think it should be in the scientific literature," said David. ➡ Can AI fix medical documentation? We saw this technology play out in a live demo play with Shivdev Rao, David Kim MD and Katherine MacPhail. ➡ Three of the most interesting new companies in the health care universe pitched their ideas to bridge drug development, health tech, and more. Allison DeAngelis Dina Radenkovic Akira Matsuno Gilad Almogy ➡ Kimberly Seals Allers, Melissa Hanna, and Simmone Taitt explained to Usha Lee McFarling how they're combatting the Black maternal mortality crisis with their health tech startups that help pregnant people avoid subpar hospitals, connect with doulas, and track health metrics. “Mental health related conditions are the number one reason for maternal mortality in our country. Twenty percent of that is suicide. So when people ask me, I’m building it selfishly for me, but also for everyone that’s suffering in silence," said Taitt. Follow along for more of our coverage. Have a second story out today: New study in Science Magazine shows high ranking military officers get better care than those with lower ranks, but also that Black patients --- high and low ranking --- get less care and resources from white physicians across the board. Experts like Lisa Cooper tell me the findings are worrisome and likely true in civilian settings as well.
