Shek O beach has to be one of my favourite beaches in Hong Kong. It’s a place that has something for everyone. Shek O Beach has been my family’s go-to beach for outdoor BBQs and picnics throughout my childhood.
1 What’s the best way to get to Shek O Beach?
No matter where you live in Hong Kong, it is quite easy to get to this beach. You can Google the different ways to get there, but my favourite is below:
- Take the MTR to Shau Kei Wan Station
- Go to Exit A2, which is the Po Man Street Exit
- Take a left and go into the minibus terminal located just next to Shau Kei Wan Exit A2
- Take the Red Minibus to Shek O
- Head on straight to the last stop at Shek O
You can also take the KMB bus route 9, which you can find when using Exit A2. You can walk straight to the “big” bus terminal opposite the exit, but I think the bus stops way too frequently and is typically very crowded. I’d recommend the bus only if there’s no minibus service available.
2 What can I do at Shek O Beach?
This beach has many facilities that allow you to have a fun and relaxing day. Below are some popular activities.
Have an Outdoor BBQ with your Family and Friends
A beach barbeque has got to be my top-of-the-list item. Every year, there are several occasions where my entire family takes time and goes off for a day trip to one of Hong Kong’s many beaches and has a BBQ. Shek O has many BBQ pits in an outdoor area that you can use free of charge! There are also large working sinks where you can clean your utensils or veggies before grilling them.
Remember to bring your own BBQ supplies before heading to the beach, as it gets pretty expensive to buy from the beach itself. I always make a quick trip to the Wellcome and Kai Bo right next to Exit A2 at Shau Kei Wan station before taking the minibus. Lastly, if it’s a particularly sunny day, you can rent umbrellas from the local vendors for the day. Remember to clean up your BBQ pit before leaving as a courtesy of being a good citizen.
Hang out at the Beach
The Shek O beach is quite spacious and allows you to chill out and listen to the rhythm of the ocean. Moreover, you can rent a beach umbrella and have your private zone. You can also buy picnic mats, snacks, and meals from nearby restaurants and tuck shops. Everything you’d need for a trip is available at any Shek O stores behind the beach, so explore and find what you need.
Hike near the Rocks in Shek O Beach
The Shek O beach is nestled between rocky hiking pathways, which are well worth exploring. You can take short hikes and explore the area for some epic ocean views and the sounds of crashing waves.
Explore the Restaurants and Food Stalls at Shek O Beach
There are many establishments around the beach where you can have a meal or a refreshing drink. You can hang around Shek O village to have street food skewers, snacks and drinks.
