Black-headed Gulls returning for winter

The first of our colour-marked Black-headed Gulls have been reported back in the UK having left their breeding sites across Europe. We should see more and more reports coming in over the next few months as we eagerly await ‘gull season’.

It has been a record breaking year in 2022 for sightings of our colour-marked birds overseas, with 47 birds reported across 13 countries so far, including Germany, Latvia, Estonia and Ukraine – the latter bird being only the fifth ever British ringed Black-headed Gull to be encountered in the country.
