The Black-billed Gull is said to be the world's most endangered gull. Endemic to New Zealand, most of the population breeds along rivers in the South Island where numbers are rapidly declining. A small population also occurs in the North Island and it is these birds that are depicted here - filmed on the shore of Lake Tarawera near Rotorua. This species has recently been given a 'Nationally Critical' status by the New Zealand Government - its highest level of conservation concern.
