Invasive Description

Native to Asia, Red Tip Photinia (P. x fraseri) is a hybrid between Photinia glabra (Japanese Photinia) and Photinia serratifolia (Chinese Photinia). Red Tip is a shrub that typically grows 10-12 ft tall but may reach 15 ft. New growth in spring is burgundy. It produces clusters of unpleasant smelling white flowers in spring or summer and is widely grown as a hedge. Red Tip Photinia is susceptible to fungal diseases when conditions are wet and humid. Entomosporium maculatum fungus is a particular threat and so severe that the plant’s landscape use is gradually disappearing in the South.

Ecological Threat

Red Tip Photinia is shade tolerant and evergreen. It can escape cultivation and outcompete native vegetation in wooded areas.

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, Red Tip Photinia is toxic to horses.
