I am having trouble getting the specification differences between this two chips from VIA.
Is anyone familiar with either of these?

Thanks, that makes the Envy24HT the obviously superior piece.

It would be nice to have a driver that could handle all the later VIA chips.
They are clearly superior to the chip used in Creative's SB Live.
And right now I can get VT1708 based cards and chips really cheap.

The VT1708 would be my choice for a cheap T10XX build.

    Hello!

Jim, what type of work are you willing to do on sound?

About the Envy24 HT, there's some drivers aside Audio Evolution...
I have the Terratec Aureon 5.1 Sky... usless for now because no operational machine to set it at the moment, but I by it for 20€.
I have too (but I let it to a friend), the Terratec Phase26 USB... not usable for now even if there's some wishes (perhaps works) on usb audio (and midi) for Poseidon...
And with the optical on both, I'm thinking about using my MOTU 828 MK2's behind it... Before using it directly on MorphOS, via USB or FireWire... One day, perhaps...

For now I use mainly macos, AudioDesk, Audacity, for record and mastering, with the MOTU's... But my target is to use only MorphOS in fine...

    Amigan salutations.

    Thanks Elric,
Since the author of Audio Evolution was able to write drivers for the Envy24HT, it ought t be possible to create a driver t handle a wider range of VIA sound chips.
Personally, I wish I could find an Envy24HT based board for 20 euros, the best price I can find right now is $79.95.

    @Jim

tbh, the best audio results I've had (quality-wise) under morphos were with Audigy 2 ZS on peg2. That's compared to the envy24ht M-Audio revolution 5.1 on the G4 I owned. Now, seeing that you're using a G5, and Audigy may not be an option and even if it is, it won't work under MacOSX, only Morphos (and Linux). So, yeah, you need an envy24 based card to have it working under all OSes.

I don't even see the Audigy listed as supported anymore.
So I guess I have to hunt for an Envy24HT.
Does anyone have a link to those drivers?

Audigy 2 ZS uses the emu10k drivers included to morphos.

You mean it is based on the same chip as the SB Live?
That does not sound like it would produce much improvement.

BTW - A quick note to all, a recent message from a VIA support tech has informed me that the company has discontinued PCI sound chip production and that they do not intend to design PCI-e compatible components.
I am awaiting a clarification, but this sounds lke they are pulling out of the market entirely.

There are PCIe audio cards with Envy24HT chipset.

I don't know whether the MorphOS driver works with them, though.

    Neat stuff.
    Thanks Andreas.
I doubt they would work with the Envy24HT driver, as the driver only works with a handful of cards.
It would be nice if the driver could be updated to handle this type of card, but I don't see that happening either.
When I get to a computer I'll append this post with the answer I received from VIA.

    Edit - quote

    "Dear James

VIA all PCI audio controller had phased out and stop production. We have no plan for PCI-e component. Thanks.

    Cheers

    Dennis Hsieh
    "

After reviewing this and VIA's current line, I believe they intend to continue to produce audio codecs, and that this merely refers to older products like the Envy24HT.
