Hello Wisconsin!

Welcome to Milwaukee! Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is often called the “Cream City” due to its historic cream-colored brick buildings. It is the largest city in Wisconsin and one of the most prominent in the United States. Located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee is known for its rich industrial history, diverse cultural heritage, and vibrant arts scene.

Milwaukee has deep roots in the brewing industry and is home to two major beer companies, MillerCoors and Pabst. Moreover, Milwaukee boasts a variety of cultural institutions and tourist attractions, such as the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Milwaukee Public Museum, and the Harley-Davidson Museum.

The city’s diverse population has contributed to a vibrant food scene, including a strong German, Polish, and Mexican culinary influence. The historic Third Ward and Brady Street areas feature restaurants, boutiques, and nightlife.

Let’s Chill

My time in Milwaukee began at Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel. Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel is recognized as one of Milwaukee’s most esteemed hotels. The hotel offers a modern luxury experience with an artful twist – with curated art, ukeleles and record players in every room. The hotel is conveniently located within Milwaukee’s Theater District and steps away from the Wells Street Lift Bridge over the Milwaukee River.

If you go: Take time to appreciate the arts! Check out the art galleries and exhibitions on-site at Saint Kate – The Arts Hotel. Additionally, there is an extensive permanent art collection found throughout the hotel, and the property hosts monthly artist talks and leads special events such as Saint Kate’s Champagne Art Tours and Gallery Night receptions.

Let’s Eat

Meet the city where the Midwest comforts of cheese, brats and custard collide with the culinary influences from diverse cultures. Milwaukee is a captivating food scene that is full of adventure, tradition and locally-sourced ingredients. Here you will find a fusion of flavors that is built on a deep appreciation for good food.

If you go:

  • Have brunch at Blue’s Egg. Blue’s Egg is a popular breakfast and brunch restaurant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Blue’s Egg dishes out delicious breakfast offerings, including omelets, pancakes and breakfast bowls known for their abundance of flavors and high-quality ingredients. I ordered the Bowl of Rejuvenation, which includes farro, arugula, roasted broccoli, mushrooms, and wild wonder tomatoes, sliced avocado, feta cheese, cucumber, radish, poached eggs or tofu scramble, sofrito sauce. I also couldn’t resist ordering the Blueberry Crumbcake.
  • Start your day at The Cafe at the Pfister. The Cafe at the Pfister is a well-known restaurant located within The Pfister Hotel, a luxurious Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. The cafe’ offers a diverse menu and includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and a traditional afternoon tea service. For my meal, I ordered the corned beef stash stack.
  • Grab dinner at DanDan. DanDan is an American-Chinese restaurant in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward. DanDan has a Chinese soul with a Midwestern sensibility. If you go, be sure to order the DanDan noodles.
  • Have a late-night bite at Milwaukee Brat House. Milwaukee Brat House has been a culinary staple for years and offers an authentic Milwaukee experience. Milwaukee Brat House offers a casual and friendly atmosphere with German-inspired dishes, beer and live music. If you go, try the Wisconsin cheese curds or Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel.

Let’s Drink

Although I did not get a chance to indulge, Milwaukee is known for a few iconic beverages including beer, brandy and the Bloody Mary.

  • Beer: Milwaukee is home to some of the largest breweries in the United States, including Pabst, Schmitz and Miller.
  • Brandy Old Fashioned: The old-fashioned cocktail of brandy, sugar, bitters and garnished fruit is popular in Milwaukee.
  • Bloody Mary: When it comes to elaborate Bloody Mary’s Milwaukee is on top. You can find them garnished with pickles, cheeses, sausages and mini-burgers.

Let’s Talk About Custard

Milwaukee refers to itself as the “Frozen Custard Capital of the World.” Custard is a beloved tradition in Milwaukee. Authentic Milwaukee custard often includes fresh dairy ingredients from local farms. Two of the most popular custard spots in Milwaukee include Leon’s and Kopps Custard.

Milwaukee is a destination where visitors can enjoy a blend of history and modern culinary experiences. Whether you are interested in history, food, the arts, outdoor activities or cultural experiences, Milwaukee offers a unique and enjoyable experience in the heart of the Midwest.
