Last Saturday (18 February), TasteAtlas, an experiential travel guide for traditional food that collates authentic recipes, food critic reviews and research articles about popular ingredients and dishes has put roti canai second in their list of the Top 50 “Best Street Foods in the World.”

The roti canai came second following the guotie, a chinese-style pan fried dumpling that is popular in Northern China, usually stuffed with ground pork, Chinese cabbage, scallions, ginger, rice wine and sesame seed oil.

Looks yummy!

Coming in third is Spain’s espetos, a typical dish in Southern Spain consists of skewering fish, traditionally sardines on thin and long rods, and roasted over firewood on the beach sand. Following espetos is Mexico’s tacos and carnitas in fourth and fifth place.

Japan’s kaarage came in sixth!

Our neighbour, Indonesia was also listed in the list with the bubur ayam being in the 13th spot. Other Indonesian favourites include tempeh mendoan in 14th place, pempek (37th), pisang goreng (40th) and serabi (41st)!

Roti canai, or also known as roti prata in Singapore (correct us if we got it wrong!) is an Indian flatbread dish found in several countries in Southeast Asia, especially Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and of course, Malaysia!

It’s our favourite breakfast dish!

What’s your favourite street food?
