The beloved Roti Canai has been named the world’s second most delicious street food by TasteAtlas, an international food guide website.
TasteAtlas recently released their list titled “The 100 Best Rated Street Foods in the World“, where the Malaysian favourite took a spot near the top. It’s a well-deserved recognition for the humble flatbread that has become a staple in Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine.
Guotie, a popular Chinese dumpling dish, clinched the top spot as the most popular street food in the world. These dumplings are filled with pork, vegetables, or other meats and are pan-fried until crispy on one side while retaining a tender filling and served with a dipping sauce.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian favourite Roti Canai’s second spot on the list is unsurprising, and it’s not hard to see why.
The savoury curry or dal perfectly complements the crispy, flaky layers of the bread it’s often served with. And for those with a sweet tooth, roti canai goes well with various condiments, such as condensed milk, sugar or even Milo, for a delicious treat.
Roti Canai or Roti Prata’s humble origin story dates back to the early 19th century.
The dish is said to have originated in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, where it was known as “parotta.” It was brought to Malaysia by Indian Muslim immigrants in the early 19th century and quickly became a favourite among the locals.
In the early days, small, family-owned Indian restaurants sold Roti Canai, but its popularity soon spread to street vendors. Today, it’s a beloved street food throughout Malaysia, Singapore and even Indonesia.
One of the reasons for its popularity is its versatility. It can be served as a savoury dish, with curry or dal, or as a sweet dish, with condensed milk or sugar. Some variations also include egg or cheese for an extra indulgent treat.

Besides Guotie and Roti Canai, TasteAtlas ranked Tacos as the world’s third most popular street food. The thin, flat griddle-baked tortillas are topped with numerous fillings, folded and eaten without utensils.
